Death and Life ♦ Maudslay State Park with foresters Bianca and Adam

We were standing where Helen Moseley’s home used to stare down at the Merrimack. The grassy field showed little evidence of the building that fire fell.

This late in the season I had expected much to have succumbed to the cold, but to my surprise there were a dozen flowers lining what used to be Miss Moseley’s driveway. Upon closer inspection there were even bees working tirelessly within the petals of every one.

We made our way towards the gardens, expecting a little more than we would have had we not just witnessed the buzz of life. Yet death crossed our paths first with a series of stone markers. Adam piped up to solve the mystery, this was a pet cemetery. I stood amazed at the bare ground, fascinated that after so many years their graves were still actively cleared of wandering leaves.

It was a modest affair when we finally reached the formal gardens but the few blooms that had graciously waited were excellent hosts.

To See the Water Again ♦ Maudslay State Park with foresters Bianca and Adam

Before this trip, I’d only truly been to Maudslay once. Still, when Adam asked where I wanted to go I instinctively mentioned the river.

In no time at all we were down to the first bridge. The piled stone’s arching form cast a vivid reflection on the water. It’s intense beauty made me yearn evermore for the grand display of the river.

Further along we hit the dam. The overflow trickled down onto twigs that time had forcibly heaped into a pile. The water above was so eerily calm, as if waiting for some unknown. But we couldn’t wait with it, the river wasn’t long from there.

The other time I had been to Maudslay was a date. We sat on the rocks overlooking the Merrimack and it was stunning; she was stunning. The river looked a bit older, or maybe that was me. It was good to be back, it’s such a fantastic view.

White Birch ♦ Maudslay State Park with foresters Bianca and Adam

After a chilly morning the sun had been dialing up the thermostat. As I paid two dollars to an emotionless yellow parking box Bianca assured me the forest would be cooler.

My more learned colleagues and I were very much not alone.  There were dozens of young cross country runners, with overly aggressive slogans printed on their jackets, collected in large circles.  Though we took to the trails before them they were soon upon us, walking what must have been their course in a single mass.

To get out of their way we veered off into a clearing, which was edged by multiple birch.  They rose shock white, like lightning from the earth.  As we took a moment to admire the blazing visage the youngsters passed. They were never seen again, lost to the forest.
