Ravenswood Park

Reflecting Beauty ♦ Hiking through Ravenswood Park

Before finding myself surrounded by the Great Magnolia Swamp, I was overlooking Fernwood Lake. Red lily pads dotted the shallows and the water perfectly mirrored the magnificent day. I looked on from a land bridge that connected shore to shore. A few children ran in swim trunks along the distant paths but no one entered the water. I could have lounged around all day while critters bounced around the shoreline trees. Instead, after a time, I moved back into the woods to find the swampland.

The swamp stood in complete contrast to the lake. I immediately recognized just how saturated the landscape was with life. Creation spilled froth from the primordial slime that edged my path. The first boardwalk I passed tempted me greatly but for fear of leaving my planned route I moved on. Now I realize that boardwalk may have been an access to the Magnolia Stands deep within the swamp. Perhaps there will be another day for that journey. Either way my chosen way did not disappoint.

A swamp is a place you have to look twice to recognize the beauty. What had been so effortlessly mirrored by the lake shown only through a dim reflection. Yet it was there, radiant as ever, if care was taken to notice.

Real Estate Trends

Beverly Real Estate Trends ♦ Beverly Cove

The real estate market is always changing. The Northshorist Group studies national, regional, and local trends to give our clients current and accurate information. Educated sellers can best determine accurate asking prices. Under pricing or overpricing, especially in a declining market can cost sellers thousands of dollars.

Currently there is a lack of inventory in the city of Beverly. The number of properties for sale is down 6.8% from last year. Some neighborhoods like Beverly Cove exemplify low inventory. You can see from the map above that there are only six properties currently for sale and five under contract. On a positive note, the five under contract have been on the market median of 35 days, very good news for sellers. This indicates a lack of supply which should increase prices.

If you are considering selling and want to know the statistics for your particular neighborhood contact us. We’d love to share our information.

Upscale Tag Sales

Beverly Farms, Massachusetts ♦ From Beverly center take 127 up into Beverly Farms

When I approached Patricia and Gina with the idea of doing an article they had no lack of stories. Quite the opposite in fact, I didn’t know which of them to choose. I think the following client-written letter describes them perfectly.

‘I knew that I needed to find an estate tag sale company that would work with me and not just for me. I’m fussy about my home, my belongings, and my memories! So much is swarming in my head …what to keep, what to sell, what to do! I called Upscale Tag Sales, at the suggestion of my Realtor. Instantly, Patricia made me feel at ease and reassured me that Upscale could take care of me and all of my ” fussiness”. When Patricia and Gina showed up at my door looking professional and full of energy, I had a feeling that I was in good hands.

Through the process of organizing and staging the estate sale, the Upscale team showed respect for my home by putting my fine furnishings on linen tablecloths to showcase them better. Sitting on the table was a framed picture of my grandma. I must have overlooked it when I packed up my belongings. Upscale put it aside along with some personal papers they found in a desk. It was a good feeling knowing that they had my interest in mind. And last but not least…the fee is taken out of the proceeds of the sale.’

Upscale Tag Sales has two locations in Beverly and Melrose. You can find them on their website or by phone at (781) 720-8383.

Ravenswood Park

Birds ♦ Hiking through Ravenswood Park

For some time now I’ve been chasing the ever allusive bird photo. I can always hear them, I can sometimes find them, but my skill with a camera is far below the threshold required to capture quality. Hence most of my pictures feature plants and trees; things that don’t tend to fly away while you’re adjusting the zoom.

But the day I trekked through Ravenswood the birds seemed to take pity. Two robins were there to greet me. They hopped briskly, staying about 20 feet ahead of my pace. I stalked as best I could but they seemed to almost welcome the attention. Even when they took flight they’d quickly return almost as if to inquire why I wasn’t following.

We walked together for quite some time. I was happy for the company.

BK Classic Collections Home Stagers

41 Old Planters Rd, Beverly ♦ From Essex St take Grover St to Old Planters Rd

A room should arrest you as you enter; it’s best features being constantly expounded upon. A good stager knows that subtle hints can be combined to best accomplish such a task. With that in mind, Betsy and Kathleen work in tandem to perfect the initial impression.

One will act as buyer, continually leaving and reentering, while the other hones the details. They’ll make sure hooks don’t indicate a lack of closets or a television isn’t crammed into an area that doesn’t have the size. Each careful clue they weave doesn’t necessarily highlight function but instead provokes a positive reaction to an aspect of the space. There is a hidden art involved that isn’t found in traditional design.

It truly can be as simple as the placement of a footstool. They relayed to me a story about just such a staging in a million dollar property. In front of a window that looked directly out onto the water they placed an iron stool. That positioning had no functional purpose but upon entrance to the room the eye would not stray. In the end the buyer might not have remembered anything about the seating but they couldn’t ever forget that view.

You can find Betsy and Kathleen at their website and on their Facebook page.

Lynch Park

Thank you David S. Lynch ♦ For our oceanfront park.

On a beautiful day, one of my favorite places to be is on bench at Lynch Park.

We can all enjoy the setting thanks to David S. Lynch, a leather manufacture and world traveler. Once while in London he passed a group of people peering through iron gates into a beautiful park. Asked why they didn’t go inside and enjoy the splendor he was told it was private. At that moment he vowed to make sure that everyone in his home city of Beverly would have a scenic place to go and enjoy the outdoors. In 1942 when David Lynch died he left $400,000 to a Lynch Park Board of trustees to buy and maintain a public park. Beverly hospital had been left the Lynch Park land by the Hunt sisters in 1936. By the early 1940‘s they were having a hard time with the expensive up keep and really didn’t have any use for the property. It was an ideal situation. The land was purchased for $50,000 by the Lynch Park Board of trustees and the city of Beverly had a new public park.

This 16 acres of oceanfront offers something for the whole family. There is space for outdoor sports, volleyball, badminton, soccer and more. In the summer there are Kayak rentals, two beaches for swimming, picnic tables and a concession stand where you can buy warm weather comfort food. On Sunday evenings in the summer there are free concerts from 6 to 8. Often you will get a glimpse of newlyweds who rent the rose garden for their wedding. Lynch park also hosts many events including road races and several of Beverly’s Homecoming activities, including the Lobster Festival. They even host our own hot air balloon event where kids get to take a tethered ride in the RE/MAX balloon.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of visiting Lynch Park recently you should put it on you “to enjoy list.” It is free for Beverly residents, with small parking fee for everyone else.

Ravenswood Park

Tightrope ♦ Hiking through Ravenswood Park

With each successive step I traveled more and more into their world. The frogs watched me with interest, pondering why I had come. A pipe served as my boardwalk, or at least it had thus far. Looking forward it wouldn’t be long until my path was overcome by swamp water. Evidently that was the subtext of the sign that warned me the trail would divert off Ravenswood property.

While I was praying for my balance to be stalwart, I snapped a few photos. I was unsure if this was even the trail anymore. If it hadn’t been for a drought this whole area would surely have been underwater.

After wading out of the slime I proceeded to get lost altogether. My wrong turn walked me smack dab into a pristine stream, an odd contrast from where I had been. The current flowed past was so crystal clear you’d think you could drink it by the handful. I took several pictures of its beauty. Still, my mind lingered on how every droplet was destined to mix with that muck. Such a waste. Eventually I turned around to relocate my way.

Jeff Stelman

26 Lynde Street, Salem ♦ From Beverly take Bridge St to Washington then onto Lynde

Jeff doesn’t know this, but at my first closing I unwittingly attempted to steal his seat at the head of the table. Before I secured the spot my more experienced teammate, Pat Marcotte, overtly hinted that I should move.

At a closing the attorney might seem to be lording over the table but this position serves a purpose. All the necessary documents can easily get to the two parties and communication lines remain unobstructed, which by in large makes the process move smoothly.

One particular time though the seller fought a very understandable battle with nerves. Being nervous at closing is completely natural but this individual appeared on the verge of a panic attack. His hands shook and head rattled. It became obvious signing the necessary documents at that moment was not something he was going to be able to do.

Realizing the need to change the room’s dynamic, Jeff left his seat and took a knee at the seller’s side. He handed off his pen and spoke slowly in a soft, reassuring tone; all the while acting as if this was how a closing always went.

In response to that truly altruistic gesture, the seller was able to find his calm and complete the closing.

Jeff’s contact info can be found on the image above but if that’s too small his office phone is (978) 745-7600 and his email is jeff@stelmanlaw.com.

Ravenswood Park

Finding the View ♦ Hiking through Ravenswood Park

Shadows stretched in the morning sun while hikers came and went. Their number indicated that the beauty of this day had not gone unnoticed. With my pack sinched tight I ventured into Ravenswood.

I passed multiple vernal pools; some wet, some dry. I had hopes of getting out early enough to see the salamanders walking about but the sun had already dispatched them to cooler sanctuaries.

The trails were laid out with a careful hand. That is not to say that they at all felt manufactured. Quite the contrary, they coursed like a quick river finding its way to safer ground. What I mean is that they were smooth and effortless; made to be walked on. As I crested the canopy parted and I was struck by the scenic view that I had seen indicated on my map. Outward I gazed over Gloucester’s Eastern Point. The ocean pooled just above the distant tree line. Although a vision, I simply shook my head and kicked myself for not getting up earlier. What pure splendor it must be at dawn.
