While pregnancy is the most natural thing in the world, the last trimester may not feel so natural to mom. The constant strain on her back, hips, and legs, not to mention difficulty breathing or finding a comfortable position, are a huge stress during those last three months. I found myself discussing ways to relieve that stress during a recent meeting with Suzanne Larkin.

Suzanne owns and operates Light Touch Healing, a massage business in the Cummings Center. We were discussing her work and had first detailed her experience with an athlete. Her story followed closely what I thought massage to be. I’ve pulled muscles before and deep tissue was instrumental in the healing process. But then she began to explain her work with pregnancies and the full scope of massage opened up to me. In broad strokes she explained how she positions pregnant mothers on the massage table to relieve strained muscles. She spoke of techniques that reduce foot and ankle swelling, ease mothers’ breathing, and even massages the belly to the baby’s delight.

Our session came to a close with a conversation about her work with the elderly. As well as volunteering for Hospice of the North Shore and Greater Boston, Suzanne attends to Alzheimer’s and dementia clients in the office. What I found most interesting is that Suzanne never promoted her services as being an indulgence or a treat. In all she shared, it was always focused on helping, teaching, and easing discomfort.
