Heightening Your Curb Appeal

EV Landscaping ♦ Draw in the buyers you’ll want to work with

In recent years home staging has become a staple of real estate. Molding the inside of a home so that potential buyers can envision themselves living there can not only reduce the time needed for a sale but can also increase the final sale price.

The outside of a home is no different. I’ve had good buyers, buyers that you would dream to put an offer in on your house, who will drive by a property to examine the curb appeal before asking for a showing. If they don’t like it then we aren’t going to see that home.

An easy fix is to hire a landscaper, like EV Landscaping out of Wilmington and Newbury. EV Landscaping has decades of experience and for a minimal cost they can create a portrait that will pull in all those potential buyers, which will in turn land you better offers. And when I say better offers I mean higher prices and more friendly conditions.

Even if you’re not looking to sell EV Landscaping does quality work and can assist you with your next landscaping project, renovation, or seasonal cleanup. You can reach EV Landscaping at (978) 658-2017 or call the owner Eric vonSchantz directly at (978) 479-0496.

Plum Island

The Plovers ♦ Visiting Plum Island

Plum Island is truly a destination for bird watching. You don’t see nearly as many impressive species on the beach but every so often you’ll find a straggler off the reserve.

The first bird I came across was the famed Piping Plover. It was running it’s little legs off in the sand to my side. It didn’t take long for the small bird to find it’s destination, another Piping Plover.

It seemed strange that two would meet in the sand like that until a baby popped up out of the sand and immediately began to dash about. The fuzz-ball was so fast I could barely snap a picture.

The new parents looked worried but hopeful as they watched their child pinwheel about on the water-soaked sand.

Plum Island

Erosion ♦ Visiting Plum Island

I’ve been going to Plum Island since I was small. As a child, I’d run down through the grassy dunes to the beach. I loved playing and building in the sloping sand. My mother would never miss a chance to warn me about the undertow, which imbued the water with a sort of dangerous allure.

My memory might be sensationalized but I remember almost a hundred feet of dunes in front of the houses. When I most recently returned all that was gone. The houses sat practically on the beach itself.

I knew there would be erosion. Beach scraping, a method of replenishing the dunes, has been banned in Massachusetts for a decade. I’d heard others talk but for some reason I still expected the beach of my memories.

As of the time of this posting the situation has been declared a state of emergency and beach scraping is the current tentative plan.

Plum Island

The Walk ♦ Visiting Plum Island

After my first failed attempt to spend the day on Plum Island beach, I knew enough to head out early. In fact, I ended up getting there so early that I was the only one in the parking lot. Overcompensation aside, I was happy to have arrived.

Since I parked at the Refuge I could only travel north towards Newburyport. When I hit the sand it was too early for the beach to feel like hot lava but the sun was doing its best to get there. After about ten minutes I committed to walking all the way to the Point and back. That decision was questioned repeatedly during the hour and a half trip.

By the time I reached the Point the sun had hidden itself away behind a sheet of clouds. You’d think this would put a damper on the elegance of it all but the way sunbeams streamed down over the ocean actually made the scene more beautiful.

The trek was peaceful but tiring. About halfway through I was passed by someone running in the sand. My legs felt more tired watching her go than they did when I finally made it back to my car.

Plum Island

Another Day ♦ Visiting Plum Island

The sun baked a dry heat, the kind that warms your skin ever so faintly. Right there, while walking to my car, if you had told me there would come a day where the sky flaunted a brighter blue I wouldn’t have believed you. I set out with the windows down and lofty ideas of a day at the beach swirling through my brain.

It had been quite some time since I’d driven over the Plum Island bridge and passed by where the sign used to read ‘no evacuation possible.’ When I arrived at the Wildlife Refuge I could barely see the gate attendee behind the line of cars. My plan was too good, it had been stolen by a mass of others.

Before I left the island, defeated but not downtrodden, I pulled off into one of the runoffs around the bridge. Stepping out of the car I could smell that old, familiar scent of salt on the air. The march grass danced before me and I snapped a couple of pictures.

Another day, Plum Island, another day.

Old Town Hill

Trail Into the Salt Marsh ♦ The view from Old Town Hill in Newbury

A bit down the road from where you’d climb the hill itself, a trail snakes out into the woods. This trail leads to acre upon acre of rivulets and salt grass. When I visited the scene was shimmering under the summer sun.

I unknowingly chose the path to the left. This brought me down by the Parker River. The water was steadily making it’s way towards high tide. There were many spots where one could sit or take a moment but I moved along at a fair pace.

After the river twisted away the path shot out into the tall grass. There the viability of the salt marsh was a complete 180 degrees. In no time at all I was back on the main trail. The course turned out to be a loop, connecting in a way that I had missed on the way in.

The trip was short but worth every step. A fair warning though, you won’t find much peace during greenhead season.

Old Town Hill

See For Miles On A Sunny Day ♦ The view from Old Town Hill in Newbury

Under the welcomed shade of an evergreen I stood at the base of Old Town Hill. The entrance wasn’t much, nothing more than a serpentine style gate painted tan. It certainly didn’t foreshadow what awaited me ahead. The path was short but ascended quickly. By the time I reached the top the steep incline left me catching my breath.

As the trees fell away the panoramic view rose. I scanned the view, alone atop the world. To my right I could see out past the sands of Plum Island. Ahead of me stood Newburyport, nestled amongst the trees. The day was so exceptionally clear I could even see the Seabrook water tower off many miles away.

Every once in a while a gust would cool the oppressive heat. For those few seconds that the wind whipped by the scene was perfect.

Newbury’s Lower Green

The Schoolhouse ♦ Visiting the Lower Green in Newbury

When I played youth soccer we would occasionally practice on the Lower Green in Newbury. We had fun kicking the ball around but what fascinated us was the old schoolhouse.

If there was ever someone new it was a particular delight. We’d shuffle them over to peer through the windows. Inside they would see figures standing there lifeless in the dark.

For years the old schoolhouse was filled with wax sculptures. There was a teacher by the chalkboard and kids looking on eagerly from the seats. The presentation, and the fact that no one could get in nor had heard of anyone ever doing so, left a chill with us as children. Every once in awhile you’d catch a silhouette in the window while running by and it would catch you off guard.

Those sculptures have been long since removed. Yet when I recently visited the schoolhouse the feeling was still there. The desks now sit with small chalk tablets awaiting a class that’s never to return.
