Topsfield-Wenham Rail Trail

Week 2 (The End) ♦ Running the Topsfield-Wenham Rail Trail

8 seconds, the numerical representation of mild success.

Exactly one week after my initial attempt I took to the rail trail again. I can’t say that my outlook was positive, as my legs had only just regained some semblance of working order, but there I was. I suppose my disappointment is what brought me back. A time of 9:24 was not acceptable.

I was by no stretch of the imagination alone. There were walkers going both ways in singles and pairs. Dogs also enjoyed trotting about on the end of a leash. From what I could tell this stretch of crushed gravel was gaining popularity.

When I finished I stood around sucking air. I checked my stopwatch to find I’d done eight seconds better than last time. Staring back I knew I had a long way to go, both back to my car and in improving my time. So I started putting one foot in front of the other.

Topsfield-Wenham Rail Trail

Week 1 (The Beginning) ♦ Running the Topsfield-Wenham Rail Trail

By the time I laced up my running shoes, the new trail on the old rail bed along 97 had been taunting me for some time. I hadn’t run since my highly unsuccessful stint as a high school track athlete but I wanted to undertake this challenge. Having been active in exercise for the past few years, I thought it wouldn’t be the agony that I so vividly remembered. In many ways I was wrong.

On a map, I judged the distance between the trail’s two intersections of 97 to be about half a mile long. Thus the plan was to run the length and back. A bit less than halfway through it became readily apparent that not only had I incorrectly judged the distance but simply going one way was going to be about a mile and a quarter.

Upon this realization my legs quickly began to beg me to halt this irrational activity and my stomach made every attempt to pause my progress. But I never stopped, finishing with a time of 9:24 and a long walk back.

Grand Wenham Canal

Walking Path ♦ Grand Wenham Canal

This weekend a good friend of mine asked me to join her while she walked her dogs. I had lived a quarter mile from the spot she brought me but I was unfamiliar with this particular path. She called it the canal but doing my do diligence online I found the official name.

The Grand Wenham Canal was built in 1917 to provide water for Beverly and Salem. It is now owned, along with its adjacent land, by the Salem-Beverly Water Commission. It was dredged and widened in 1974, with gravel roads built on each side. You can access the it from Old Town Way off Cherry Street.

I’m still amazed that I never knew it existed. It’s perfect for an easy run or pleasant walk. There’s even the added bonus it is dog friendly. Don’t forget a dog towel! Dogs love the freedom of the path as well as access to the swamp and canal water to cool off.
